Saskatoon Berries The saskatoon is a fruit bearing shrub native to the Canadian prairies. It is extremely adaptable and grows under a wide range of environmental conditions. Saskatoon berries were originally used as a major food source and as medicine by the native people and early settlers of the North American prairies. Saskatoons are a good source of the recommended daily allowance for iron (22%), manganese (34%), calcium (11%), vitamin C (30%) and carotene (20%) for each 100 gm serving, as well as supplying other nutrients. The dark purple color of saskatoon berries is due to the presence of pigments called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins (from two Greek words meaning "plant" and "blue") are known as flavonoids. Flavonoid compounds have been attributed to provide health benefits against chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease, and macular degeneration. The deep color of saskatoon berries suggests that this fruit contains high levels of anthocyanins and high antioxidant activity similar to blueberries.
Alfalfa Meal Alfalfa is an excellent blood purifier which not only removes toxins from the body; it helps cleanse the kidneys, improves a pet’s ability to absorb proteins and other nutrients, reduces allergies and has anti-inflammatory characteristics.
Omega Fatty Acids Horizon Complete contains optimal levels of essential fatty acids which has many benefits to animals. Not only do they provide healthy skin and lustrous coat, they also contribute to a healthy heart, increased levels of immunity and are natural anti-inflammatories.
Yucca Schidigera Yucca is proven to reduce stool and urine odor (which is great for indoor cats). Yucca is also a digestive aid and a natural anti-inflammatory.
Prebiotics Chicory root extract (FOS) is classified as a prebiotic as it has the ability to selectively promote and stimulate the growth and activity of healthy intestinal bacteria (such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) at the expense of the less friendly putrefactive bacteria. Mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) stimulates the development of beneficial protective lactobacillus and bifidobacterium organisms.
Probiotics Probiotic bacteria are living micro-organisms that favorably alter the intestinal microflora balance, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, promote good digestion, boost immune function, and increase resistance to infection.
Chelated Minerals The body needs the full range of the 17 essential minerals or elements for specific functions, including the proper utilization of vitamins and enzymes as well as maintaining healthy blood, bones, teeth, muscle, and nerve cells. Chelated Minerals are the form most-often recommended to assure proper daily intake and absorption. Chelated basically means “firmly attached”, usually to amino acid molecules. Once the chelated mineral enters the bloodstream, the mineral is able to break free from the amino acid carrier and become more accessible and absorbable in the digestive system.
